Jovita Wore Pants by Aida Salazar
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I picked this up after it was mentioned in an article.
I loved the story of this early strong woman and how she was so sure of herself. It was a great story for young girls, but had a lot of history behind it. That history makes the story a good one for an older child or an adult. The illustrations were perfect for the mood of the story.
I recommend this book, but feel that it might be a little much for a bedtime story.
The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I had this book handed to me by a friend, but it still took me a while to get to it. I was judging the book by its cover, I believe.
This book sucked me in right away. I enjoyed it immensely. I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other. The story kept me engaged the whole time. I was a little disappointed at the ending, mostly because I felt that so many other parts of the book grabbed my emotions and the ending didn't.
I would recommend this book.
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I put off reading this for a long time and I finally got to it. I'm so glad I did.
I enjoyed the cast of characters. Each character had their own personality and I loved it placed inside a coffee shop. Even though most of the characters didn't know that they would enjoy bean water so much when the book started, it became a central theme to the book.
I loved this so much and I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading the prequel.
Movies and more
Vertigo
After so many years, I finally got around to seeing Vertigo. I haven't seen too many Alfred Hitchcock movies, but I decided it was about time that I started watching some of them. I had seen The Birds and Psycho, but that was really about it. I was expecting Vertigo to be a horror movie, too, but I was assured that it was not scary at all. I truly enjoyed the movie and I wish I hadn't waited so long to see this wonderful movie. I highly recommend it.
The Substance
I recently started up my monthly pass to the Alamo Drafthouse near me. I am determined to use it to its fullest. I went to see a movie and ran into a friend who had just seen The Substance. I don't like horror movies much, mostly because I hate the jump scares. My friend assured me that nothing would jump out at me, but it was definitely horror. It was uncomfortable, but I could definitely handle it. The parts that were supposed to be gory I found laughable. I did enjoy the movie, but I probably would not see it again. I do recommend the movie.
My Old Ass
I loved the premise of this movie. A young adult meets her future self and has to decide what pieces of advice to take to heart. Would I have listened to my future self? I'm not sure. Would I live my life differently with this extra knowledge? I don't know. I loved that the young adult actress used to be on the show, Nashville. I was disappointed that she didn't sing in this movie, since I knew from Nashville that she can sing. I still recommend the movie. It had a lot of thought provoking point in it, along with laughs.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
I really enjoyed the first Beetlejuice movie, so I was thrilled to learn that there was a second, with mostly the same cast. I enjoyed this film, but not quite as much as the first one. Neither movie is scary, which was a plus for me. The music in the first one was much better than in the second. The twist that I thought was coming in the second film never happened, but I do think they did a great job with the movie. I might see it again sometime, but it isn't high up on my todo list. It is worth seeing, though.
