October Reviews
Books
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I picked this up in order to leave an honest review.
I enjoyed this book a lot. When I picked it up originally, I was expecting it to be spicier than it actually is. It has the perfect combination of spice to life and was a surprisingly satisfying book.
I recommend this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I picked this up because I have enjoyed this author's other works.
This book was no disappointment. It was a great story, and I enjoyed the humor in it. The book had me hooked from the second or third chapter. I had to find out how the book ended.
I highly recommend this book.
Illuminations by T. Kingfisher
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I picked this up because I loved the author's other works.
This book had a slower start than I was expecting, so it took a bit for me to get into. Once I really started it, I couldn't wait to finish it. I really enjoyed the book and I'll never look at a radish the said way again.
I recommend this book.
Almost American Girl by Robin Ha
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I picked this up for bookclub.
I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I was pleasantly surprised that it was an interesting read with calming graphics. I enjoyed following the author through her teen years into adulthood.
I recommend this book.
The June Paintings by Maggie Shipstead
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I picked this up because I had liked the other books in this series.
I was very glad it was short. The first 3/4 of the book kind of dragged on. I didn't start liking it until the last part of the book.
I'm glad I read it, since I didn't want to have gaps in the series, but this was not as good as the others in the series.
I can neither recommend nor not recommend this book.
Movies and more
Piece By Piece
I found myself with an open afternoon and a monthly movie pass. Piece By Piece sounded interesting. It is the story of Pharrell Williams' life, told in Legos. I loved it. I didn't realize that he had written so many pieces for so many artists. I loved seeing these artists in Lego, too. The movie was fun and worth seeing.
The Play that Goes Wrong
I went to the San Francisco Playhouse to see The Play that Goes Wrong. I had seen it several years ago with a different theater company. This one was smaller, but just as fun. It might have been more fun, actually, since, because it was in a smaller theater, the audience seemed to be included more. If you get a chance to see this play, do it. It's good for a laugh, even though a lot of it is slapstick.
We Live in Time
I went to see We Live in Time at the theater. It was confusing at first, since it jumps from time to time, over the course of a couple's relationship. It was a good movie once I figured out what was happening and when it was happening. I'm glad I saw it, but I doubt it will be a repeat viewing for me.
